I found out something yesterday that I found quite exciting... The Red Wings are going to be opening the 2009-10 NHL season in Stockholm, Sweden with 2 games v. St. Louis Blues. Also, the Chicago Blackhawks will be playing 2 games in Helsinki, Finland v. Florida Panthers.
VERY COOL. I know the Red Wings have about 7 Swedes on their roster, and will definitely have a great turn out there. I wonder if there is a way for me to find tickets?! I do have a friend in Stockholm AND it's one of my top travel destinations. Hmmm... the wheels are turning.

A little birdy told me
That Shamrock Shakes are back!!! I can't wait to check out the Mc Donald's next door to work tomorrow to see if this is true in Chicago. I am going to have to limit myself, for budgetary and caloric reasons but MAN DO I LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR!!!

Megan and Ambar's Marvelous Arctic-like Adventure
That's right... Artic-like, right here in the heart of Chicago. Although today was quite balmy comparatively to Thursday and Friday. Yesterday when I woke up the weather channel app on my phone said it was -16 degrees out, and felt like -34. Now... how am I supposed to know what -34 degrees feels like? I think at zero they should just stop counting and say it below zero and don't go the f* outside! LOL I wore all the layers I could for the commute and work, my patented ninja look was in full force.... so that only left my eyelashes to freeze together from the tears the wind brought to my eyes!We've had snow for some time now, and I am so glad that I dug out my car last Sunday and tucked it away in the garage before all the freezing temps came into town.
Well so i guess battling the cold was quite the adventure in itself. Ambar celebrated her birthday on Thursday, and we were
gonna rebel against the then -8 degrees and get some ice cream (because she loves it so!) but because of schedules, we just couldn't get out of the office to do so. And despite us being out late on the am-'bar' crawl last night, we had a date today. Polar Adventure days, sponsored by the Chicago Park District.I made it down to Ambar's about 1230 and parked in her neighborhood (where I hoped not to get stuck in a spot!) She and I just wanted to get out, enjoy it being above 0 today (20, felt like 5!) so we had our thermal layers and our boots and we created our own polar adventure on our way to Northerly Island.
We were in no hurry, and certainly dressed for the weather so we took the "long way" walking through her neighborhood, (which like she always told me was quite serene and great homes and parks.) We walked from 9th to 18th then east towards the lake. This takes us on the bridge over the metra lines and under lakeshore drive just south of Soldier Field. We were having so much fun just walking and talking, and I had to remove some layers as I was getting quite toasty. We loved all the snow and found a sledding hill where I really wanted to ask someone if I could take a quick ride!! We finally worked our way north on the bike path to the museum campus and out towards the penninsula. Once there, I got to rent some snowshoes and walk around and play with some sled dogs :) Topped off with some hot cocoa, it was actually really fun. But our walk there definitely was the best!
We walked by the museums on our way back and stopped off and had dinner at 11 city diner and had a french dip sandwich and fries :) A great end to a great day (until i had to get my car unstuck!) haha

That's right, I have the best job
Well second best apparently, according to the most recent "top careers" survey done by careercast.com. The study was done by taking 200 professions to determine the best and worst according to five criteria inherent to every job: environment, income, employment outlook, physical demands and stress. So minus the exam stress, I think they might be right on.

Outlook on 2009
I have to admit that 2009 definitely started off in pretty good fashion with a private champagne toast and a kiss at midnight (my first ever!), followed by a fabulous day at the ballpark for a hockey game that was even more exhilarating than expected! My hope is that 2009 continues to be this good. I hope to treat myself well, pass another exam, stay in touch better with my friends and family, and see where that takes me :)
Some other things I'd love to accomplish: become more confident in the kitchen, visit at least 2 new states, start golfing again, and maybe accupuncture.

Wonderful Wings Win WinterClassic
Oh my.... the game was AMAZING, definitely exceeded my expectatios and worth every penny to be there today. I have my pics posted on facebook, and I'll put some videos here.
The weather was perfect: it hovered around 30, not windy down in the seats, and slightly overcast so there was no sun/shadow problems. I was dressed for the weather (or to keep me in a game of strip poker for quite a while) with my long johns and yoga pants on beneath my jeans, three shirts layered under my parka, and topped with my Fedorov jersey :-)
I had 2 pair of smartwool socks, boots, gloves, scarf, ear wrap, ear muffs, and my hat. I was prepared for the weather as I boarded the EL but had to brave the blackhawks fans! I was on my own, no friends or body guards to help me defend the wings and protect me! Gates at Wringley opened at 10 and I got there around then, but did a lap around the park to take in the atmosphere, get some pictures, and check out the Spectator Plaza full of food, drink, fans, and music. I made my way to the bag check line and entered Wrigley about 11 am, found my seat and stayed put.
I had made myself a hot breakfast before I left home so I didn't have any intentions in indulging in food and drink until later because I did not want to battle lines for the bathroom knowing that everyone is probably bundled as much as me and will take hella long to get through those lines. Instead, I enjoyed being heckled and chatting with fellow fans. I watched them zamboni the ice, and the great chicago sports legends get honored and the teams take the ices just after noon. Here's the opening faceoff (sorry I zoomed, I'm just learning about this video stuff!):
Being there was unbelievable, I knew it was going to be a good game regardless of the outcome, but obviously hoped for the wings to win. After the first period, I wasn't too sure that would happen, but cheered relentlessly nonetheless! It had been a very physical and energetic start, with lots of penalties and scruffs on the ice, spurring lots of "LETS GO RED WINGS/DETROIT SUCKS" cheers/jeers from the crowd.
After the intermission, the Wings came back in the second period with a vengeance, showing off our professionalism and talent. We quickly tied it up and later Datsyuk scored on a break away to take the lead and the wings never looked back. In the third period we got 1 ruled a goal after being reviewed and one more to give us our six. The 'hawks didn't score again till 1o seconds remaining in the game. Final score: 6-4, we won, just as I hoped :-)
The whole experience was classic and complete with a rendition of "take me out to the 'hockey' game."

Winter Classic Update
So I now have my ticket in hand.... and the game is only days away!! Who's excited!?!?
Uh huh.. thought so. SO even after all the crazy warm weather this past weekend, the ice is taking shape and being monitored to be ready for game day. I know the blackhawks are coming in off of a franchise record winning streak, and the wings are kind of struggling, but I'm hoping for a good match-up!
